VOCATIONS
By the profession of the evangelical counsels the characteristic features of Jesus — the chaste, poor and obedient one — are made constantly "visible" in the midst of the world and the eyes of the faithful are directed towards the mystery of the Kingdom of God already at work in history, even as it awaits its full realization in heaven.
What is a Vocation?
(vocare) meaning “to call”
Every one is called to have a personal and intimate relationship with God. It is up to us to respond to this invitation from Him. There are two types of vocations, marriage and consecrated life. Although the Church has established these two vocations, our main and first vocation is holiness.
Discerning Your Vocation
(discernere) meaning “to distinguish”
Discernment is being able to recognize how God is working in our lives and to respond to His invitations. Discernment is also being able to filter between God’s voice, the world’s voice, and our own voice. We don’t do this on our own, we rely on Gods grace.
TIPS FOR DISCERNMENT
1. Relationship
Having a relationship with the Father is the foundation of the spiritual life. Knowing who God is and who we are to Him. We are to know, seek, and love God, because we are known, seen, and loved by God first. Our first vocation is holiness.
2. Prayer
In order for us to know someone well we need to spend time with them frequently. Although we may have dryness in prayer, God is still present and still longs for us. Give your time to Jesus in prayer. Whether its through vocal prayer, adoration, resting in His presence, or reading the Bible.
3. Action
Although having patience in discernment is important, there must be a leap of faith. Trust that the God of Mercy will be leading you every step of the way.
